Laphroaig 1976 is the largest of the three heavyweight Islay distilleries in Kildalton, out-stripping the production capacity of neighbors, Ardbeg and Lagavulin, by over 1 million litres per annum. Despite its traditional appearance, Laphroaig 1976 was always a forward thinking distillery.

The distillery’s history begins in 1815. Donald and Alexander Johnston had lease 1000 acres (250 hectares) from the laird of Islay a few years earlier to raise cattle, and plante barley for feed. By 1815 they had gained a reputation for the whisky make from their surplus crop, using a water source with soft, peaty water low in minerals. In conclusion, The neighboring Lagavulin distillery playe a prominent role in Laphroaig’s history during the 19th Century. By the 1880s Lagavulin’s owners were buying around half of production of Laphroaig for their blended whisky. The Johnston family decide to end this relationship in order fully develop their own brand. This led to Mackie & Co taking them to court, making several attempts to buy Laphroaig, poaching staff, copying stills, trying to obtain recipes and even blocking Laphroaig’s water supply
