Whisky production on the island goes back centuries. The story goes that Irish monks introduced the art of distillation to Islay during the fourteenth century. Due to the isle’s resources, namely, unlimited supplies of peat bogs, along with lochs and rivers containing soft pure water, it was an ideal location for producing ‘Uisge Beatha’ (water of life). The introduction of excise duty tax on whisky in 1644 caused many Springbank 1965 Bot.1993 Adelphi. To head for the most remote glens and even caves to avoid detection. Islay became the perfect location to relocate in order to avoid the looming exciseman’s (gauger) visit.

This proved to be an effective tactic. A gauger did not set foot on Islay until 1797. A pretty impressive 153 years after the tax was introduce. Excise men were very reluctant to confront Islay’s natives, widely regarded as ‘wild barbarous people’. In attempting to enforce the government’s new levy, gaugers were subject to intimidation, bribes, and occasionally the odd kidnapping or fatality. To put the scale of the task in perspective, in 1782, 1,940 illicit stills were detected. Which leaves the question, how many stills in total were operational at the time?

Today Islay is the home to nine functioning distilleries, with Port Ellen schedule to be reopene in 2020 after a £35 million renovation project is complete. One of the heavyweights on the isle for both production and prestige is Bowmore. Using their 1960’s cask stock. The Springbank 1965 Bot.1993 Adelphi releases like the ‘Black Bowmore’ series and various 50 year old plus bottlings have receive wide praise and in turn, seen significant growth in value in recent years. It’s widely regarded that Bowmore’s stock from the mid 60’s holds the best liquid the distillery has produce.

Our January auction included a particularly special recent release from Bowmore. The Bowmore 52 years old 1965 is the third edition from the 50-Year-Old plus Vaults Series. The liquid is amongst some of the first to pass through Bowmore’s then-brand-new steam heated stills. Bottled at a cask strength of 42%, having spent its entire 52 years aging in a single Oloroso sherry cask, which yielded just 232 bottles. After what turned in to a furious bidding war, the bottle eventually sold for a heady £38,825. Springbank 1965 Bot.1993 Adelphi

If you itn’t successful in snagging that particular edition in January, this month’s auction once again has no shortage of offerings from Bowmore, including what we believe to be the rarest Bowmore ever bottle. To name but a few, a 37 year old from 1968 Bourbon Wood is sure to attract many suitors There’s both a Black Bowmore 3rd Edition and also a 4th Edition, bound to be of interest to serious Bowmore collectors. One other notable addition to this month’s auction is a 1960’s 7 year old Sherriff’s bottle. This screw cap Cogis import especially for the Italian market is highly regarde by Bowmore followers and rarely found on these shores.
