Nose:

Wood fire, salt, seaweed, agave, brine, vinegar, mustard seeds, lemon juice. Very punchy and maritime with typical dirty yet dry and woody allied era ardbeg smoke. Some mossy forest notes too (almost something mushroomy?) and only after thorough searching a little vanilla custard sweetness comes through.

Palate:

Fantastic mouthfeel, oily and big, yet not too alcoholic. It immediately arrives with big bold smoke, along with lemon syrup, wood spice, moss, charcoal, brine, seaweed and a touch of caramel in the back. More typical allked era goodness, though the oak is starting to temper the distillate a little more than with the mid teens ones i’ve had so far. It gets noticeably sweeter the more sips you take and the mkre you let your palate adapt to the whisky. SMWS 33.21 (Ardbeg) 1977 16 Year Old

Finish:

Long, big smoke, oak spice, moss, charcoal, ash, lemon, honey, nori.

Overall:
What a dram! Another big, bold, typical allied era Ardbeg. Despite the age starting to temper the distillate’s ferocity, this has still got plenty of punch and smoke. Octomore has got nothing on it. No modern bullshit, no chateau blabla cask finish or fermentation in 30 scottish highland cow stomachs but just good, simple, maritime refill bourbon peat. What more could one want?
